Cardiac Cath Lab

(856) 339-6079

Memorial Hospital opened a cardiac catheterization lab in September 2006.

As a diagnostic tool, cardiac catheterization can measure pumping and valve pressures within the heart; take samples of blood; and inject dye into the heart chambers so their movements can be seen. It can also estimate the volume of blood pumped by the heart with each beat and assess heart valve problems.

And heart catheterization is a low-risk diagnostic procedure. The overall risk of major complications is 1 in 1,000 cases. The risk of death attributed to this type of procedure is 0.08 percent.

Elias “Leo” Iliadis, MD, is the program’s Medical Director. He received his medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and completed his internship and residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia. He also studied cardiology on fellowship at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, Chicago, and the University of Michigan Hospitals, Ann Arbor.

Dr. Iliadis is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention.

Cardiologists can meet with prospective patients on an outpatient basis, usually in the hospital’s Same Day Surgery consultation area, or when they are patients in the hospital. They work with the person’s primary care physician to determine if cardiac catheterization is necessary and if that person is a good candidate for the low-risk lab at Salem.
