January 2010 - MHSC Keeps Pace with the Changing World of Medicine

The Memorial Hospital of Salem County (MHSC) is a 140-bed community hospital that has been caring for the community since 1919. MHSC features an active medical staff of nearly 200 physicians in a number of specialties. The hospital offers healthcare services such as a 24/7 Emergency Room noted for prompt service. We feature comprehensive imaging services through Salem Medical Imaging that rival most big city hospitals, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI - Open 1.5 High Field); a 40-slice CT Scanner; Digital Mammography, Digital Fluoroscopy, and Nuclear Medicine. Imaging as well as Laboratory studies are available at MHSC or at our satellite locations at 499 Beckett Rd. in Logan Twp and in Pennsville (lab).

On display during the Open House were  the latest upgrades in surgical services, including a Fixed Boom Hi-Definition Video Operating System that integrates Hi-Definition video and flat-panel monitors for increased clarity, safety and efficiency.

In 2009 MHSC introduced the Salem Surgical Weight Loss Center and The Salem Wound & Vascular Center/Physical Rehabilitation. Also, The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services designated MHSC as a Primary Stroke Center. In addition, NJDHSS licensed MHSC to perform inpatient dialysis.

“This past year our hospital brought several new programs and advancements to our area,” said Robert Vanderslice, chairman, The Memorial Hospital of Salem County Board of Trustees, and president, Pennsville National Bank. “Our team continues to work each day to bring quality and compassionate care to everyone who lives in Salem County and surrounding communities.”

“Our sole purpose, our only mission, is for the benefit of our community,” said James L. Angle, Chief Executive Officer. “We continue to touch the lives of people all across not only Salem County, but also Gloucester and Cumberland counties, and Delaware. The Memorial Hospital of Salem County is a great place for physicians to practice, patients to receive care, and employees to work.”

MHSC  was recognized in 2010  by ’s leading healthcare ratings company, with 5-Stars for the Treatment of Pneumonia. In 2008 MHSC was the recipient of the HealthGrades General Surgery Excellence Award for having been ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in general surgery for three years in a row (2006-2008). MHSC also earned the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission – the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting accrediting body in health care.

Growth is not limited to the hospital. Salem Medical Group (SMG) is a multi-disciplinary group of physicians in the following specialties: Endocrinology, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Surgery (Bariatrics, General Surgery, and Advanced Laparoscopic/Minimally Invasive), Neurology, Pediatrics, and Primary Care. In 2009 SMG opened new primary care offices in Pennsville, Mullica Hill and Swedesboro. In 2010 SMG will open the doors to its newest medical office in Woodstown. SMG physicians are also located in Salem and Logan Twp.

“We are an integral part of this community,” continued Angle. “What’s good for Salem County is good for us. What’s good for us is good for Salem County. That’s why we’re again pleased to join together with other leading organizations to be a ‘Partner of Salem County.’”

MHSC is one of seven community partners including PSEG Nuclear, Mannington Mills, DuPont Franklin Bank and Today's Sunbeam. Since 2000, the Partner’s program has been working to improve the quality of life for all Salem County residents.

MHSC contributions go well beyond mending bones and healing hearts. The hospital gives back to the community in many ways.  MHSC is among the top employers in the county and thus makes an important economic contribution. The hospital is not only committed to the current workforce, but also works closely with Salem Community College and the Salem County Vocational Technical School in providing scholarships to support their efforts in educating tomorrow’s leaders through a variety of programs. Along with the other Partners, The Memorial Hospital of Salem County in the past nine years has helped to raise funds now totaling over $500,000– monies that have been directly earmarked for local charities and scholarships.

Additionally, MHSC contributes significantly to the community in Charity Care, real estate taxes and state taxes.

Volunteers play a major role in the hospital’s day-to-day operations, and the volunteering spirit is a vibrant one at Memorial. The volunteers at the hospital share one attribute in common: a selfless desire to serve. “Senior Circle,” with nearly 1,000 members and growing, brings together seniors for a range of daily activities that include trivia contests, scrapbooking, journal writing and health lectures. More than 1400 members make up “Healthy Women,” a program aimed at empowering women with the knowledge and confidence to make informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their families.
